Once I reached puzzles at an appropriate difficulty, I've spent 10-20 minutes on most puzzles on average. They get harder as your rating increases but I ALWAYS take my time and solve for correctness. Do it every day and try to get one puzzle further each day. This will start you with the most simple tactical patterns, like hanging pieces and basic mate-in-ones and make you feel like a rock-star but they will gradually get more difficult. Practicing the tactics and getting more advanced: > puzzle rush > survival mode. Do one (both) book/s all the way through and you'll have a great grasp on tactics. Yasser's Winning Chess Tactics is good for learning the different motifs, and as for getting some decent practice with a lot more puzzles, two books I recommend are Coakley's Chess Exercises for Kids which has the best solutions section I've ever seen for a beginner, and 1001 Chess Exercises for Beginners. You're looking for a book that explains things in the introduction to each chapter and most importantly, in the solutions section-hopefully they explain why the tactic works and why other lines don't work.
